Film Overview

The year before Kurt Cobain committed suicide, music journalist Michael Azerrad, working on his book “Come As You Are: The Story of Nirvana,” recorded over 25 hours of audiotaped interviews with the legendary rock musician. These previously unheard tapes coupled with images of Aberdeen, Olympia, and Seattle-the three Washington cities influential to Cobain's career-are the basis for AJ Schnack's innovative documentary KURT COBAIN ABOUT A SON. Cobain intimately discusses his childhood, his depression, his drug problem, his issues with the media, and his wife Courtney Love. His reflections are candid, droll, and oftentimes pained with anger. The eclectic soundtrack features music from over 20 of Cobain's influences-including Queen, David Bowie, Creedence Clearwater Revival, and Scratch Acid-as well as an original score by Death Cab for Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard. Cobain, who hoped to “change people's way of thinking about celebrities,” does so by defying his own enigmatic image and painting a sincere, tangible self-portrait. – E.J.B.
