It’s the hard knock life for Adam (Benett Vilmányi), a poor 21-year-old shepherd with a severe stutter who doesn’t have much of a future outside of working on his father’s farm. But in hip-hop, Adam finds a potential path toward managing his speech impediment and altering his fate, in this award-winning debut feature. —M.G.

LARRY follows Adam, a young lonely introvert with a speech impediment who lives with his religious, recovering alcoholic father in Hungary. Adam’s only escape from the shadow of his economically troubled town and his father’s history of physical abuse is his secret passion for rap. With the support of his father’s doting girlfriend and a fellow amateur rapper, Adam begins to perform in public and reveal his inner demons. As Adam prepares for a talent competition that could be his liberation from his father and small town, the film eschews sentimentality in favor of sharp observational insight about Adam and the community he comes from—resulting in a rich and cathartic character study of a burgeoning performer on the margins. —C.F.
