It was a Dark and Stormy Night in 1998 when Helmut, lying sodden in a puddle of rainwater, suddenly stopped being a commitment-shy wimp. This is his story, covering 16 years of the hero's romantic mishaps, mismatches, breakups and unrequited longings since his high-school days when he fell hard for Britta, a golden-girl class president and anti-nuclear activist, a left-wing Lorelai with boundless concern for the world's oppressed millions. By contrast, Britta had no problem breaking Helmut's heart and moving on.
