About This Film
Film Overview
Fifteen-year-old Stefan finds himself at a crossroads during the 1996 Serbian election when he learns his mother is a spokesperson for Miloševi?’s ruling socialist party, the very regime he and his radicalized students are mobilizing against. From the acclaimed director of 2009’s “Ordinary People.”It’s 1996 in Serbia and demonstrations across the country against the Milošević regime are becoming increasingly violent. Despite his mother, Marklena’s, high-profile job as a spokeswoman for this corrupt government, 15-year-old Stefan joins in student protests with his friends, becoming increasingly radicalized and keeping his connection to his mother as quiet as possible. But as tensions rise and Marklena’s involvement becomes undeniable, Stefan finds himself suddenly isolated from his peers, who blame him for her actions. Following Stefan’s lonely struggle to balance his love for his mother with his devotion to the cause of the people, LOST COUNTRY is a masterful slowburn that captures the complex political turmoil of 1990s former Yugoslavia. —G.S.
