About This Film
Film Overview
An eye-opening documentary about the controversial clash of homosexuality and religion, LOVE FREE OR DIE tells the story of Gene Robinson, Episcopal Bishop of New Hampshire and the first openly gay partnered person to be consecrated in the three largest high church traditions of Christendom—Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, and Anglican. Refusing to live a lie, Gene endures constant prejudice, criticism, and even death threats as he fights for equality within a religion that preaches love, acceptance, and honesty. A truly selfless, warm Christian, Gene denounces discrimination of any form and believes that the Church needs to take responsibility for what its scripture empowers people to do—love. Following Gene from his 2008 civil union to the 2009 Episcopal General Convention, in which they voted on the justification of both the consecration of gay bishops and the blessing of same-sex marriages in states where it is legal, LOVE FREE OR DIE reverently covers progressively significant civil rights issues our country faces today. – M.M.
