About This Film
Film Overview
From 2010 to 2022, Spanish law dictated that a pregnant woman must wait three days before seeking an abortion. For 40-year-old Lola, those three days will feel like an eternity as she ruminates on her place in modern society and this major decision, further complicated by her partner’s sudden desire to be a father. While the majority of Lola’s friends either have kids or are trying to have kids, at the age of 40 Lola is certain she wants to remain childless. Lola loves her life with her boyfriend and her dog, and she loves her job as a professor. But when she finds herself with an unplanned pregnancy, she begins to re-examine things. Spanish law at the time (a law that was repealed in 2022) required a woman to wait three days before terminating a pregnancy, and during this period, Lola imagines her life in different scenarios, consulting with family, friends, and her partner before deciding how to move forward. Tackling the ever timely issues of the right to choose, and societal stigma against women who choose not to have children, MAMÍFERA (which translates to “female mammal”) is a reflective, creative, and thought-provoking narrative film. —G.S.
