MEE POK MAN

This high-quality, low-budget film borrows unashamedly from American independent cinema influences, yet avoids standard cliches, while creating a story that is both touching and disturbing. MEE POK MAN follows a young, lonely mee pok (fish noodle) vendor who falls in love from afar with a beautiful, self-absorbed street hooker named Bunny, and is forced to watch the abuses she endures at the hands of her pimp and his hoodlums. Shades of “Taxi Driver” emerge as the Mee Pok Man begins to believe that he can be her savior. When the savagely beaten Bunny is tossed out of a car in front of his noodle stand, he takes her to his room to care for her and a very stange love affair develops. Though some may find the film's final scenes overly disturbing, Eric Khoos's bold style and uncompromising efforts announce him as an emerging director of real promise.
