Film Overview

Director Peter Brook has successfully tackled the fascinating story of mystic G.I. Gurdjieff's search for truth. Drawn from Gurdjieff's writings, the film tells the story of the young man's travels through the Middle East, Central Asia and Africa on a journey that lasts more than two years, seeking out remarkable men who can answer some of life's enduring mysteries. Aided by Gilbert Taylor's stunning photography, Brook gradually develops an otherworldly beauty to these wanderings, culminating in the unforgettable ballet-like dances and exercises of the secret Sarmoung Brotherhood. Dragan Maksimovic and Terence Stamp take leading roles. Peter Brook, though primarily an experimental theater director, has directed several fascinating films in his long career, including “Lord of the Flies” (1963), “Marat/Sade” (1967) and “King Lear” (1971). “A lyrical, deeply poetic evocation of one man's search for knowledge.” – San Francisco Examiner
