About This Film
Film Overview
In a wooded suburb in the Benelux, Claire, an adolescent girl in an affluent but sterile household, suffers alone through her first burst of menstrual blood. Fleeing in terror to a shed, she finds another child bleeding – but from a pistol shot that was meant to kill him. The nameless boy, with vaguely Middle-Eastern features but who speaks no language known to Claire, is a drug syndicate's expendable “mule”. His digestive-tract still holds balloons of cocaine he was supposed to smuggle past customs. Claire was herself an abandoned orphan and feels more affinity for this semi-feral alien youth than for her adoptive parents. She treats and shelters him in secret, then goes on the run from his implaccable pursuers. As her world becomes larger, it has suddenly also become threatening and terrible. An eerie, poetic and unsettling depiction of innocence lost, of the magic of childhood blending into the evil that adults do MOONLIGHT plays out an unforgettable nocturne.
