About This Film
Film Overview
Dash is having a bad week. He’s thrown off his high school newspaper staff for childishly slandering his best friend and writing partner Assaf, who just so happens to be romancing the paper’s whip-smart editor Verti. Still, this pales in comparison to what comes next. Thanks to an auditorium addition that isn’t up to code, Dash’s high school slowly collapses into the ocean after an earthquake. A motley crew of survivors—including Dash, Assaf, Verti, self-righteous scenester Mary, and a gruff lunch lady with a heart of gold—must set aside personal differences and cooperate in order to (hopefully) escape the crumbling edifice. This wry animated feature softens the inevitable carnage by employing gorgeous interstitial scenes rendered in rich, deep hues. However, MY ENTIRE HIGH SCHOOL SINKING INTO THE SEA is unsentimental about the adolescent caste system and its inherently petty ways. More than that, it’s a subtle and scathing portrayal of modern society’s selfish, me-first attitudes and sardonic approach to life—both of which persist even when tragedy strikes. —A.Z.
