Twenty-year-old Pavel returns from war having lost an eye ? and his soul. He?s desperate for some connection, since re-entering society hasn?t been at all pleasant. He writes his father, Yulik, and asks to stay with him. Yulik, however, isn?t even convinced he?s Pavel?s father, and has a nice quiet life with his wife and two children?teenage son, Egor, and young daughter, Anya. Yet Yulik relents, just until Pavel gets eye replacement surgery. Egor takes an instant dislike to Pavel, but the rest of the family is drawn to his quiet charms and his vulnerability. He is deeply scarred psychologically, and sees ghosts everywhere. Interestingly, the term for ghosts or spooks in Russian has a new second meaning: it?s derived from a word used to describe Afghan soldiers in the Russian/Afghanistan war. Pavel, as one would imagine, is a ticking time bomb. The question is: when will he go off?
