Film Overview

With the 1982 release of the widely praised “Eating Raoul,” writer-director Paul Bartel received the kind of acceptance and recognition with the general public that he already earned from serious movie buffs for his short films made in the late 60s. “Private Parts,” “Death Race 2000” and “Cannonball” established the tongue-in-cheek, personal style Bartel developed as a Fullbright scholar studying film in Italy. Bartel's comedic acting in his own and other films has made his fact a familiar one to the public. NOT FOR PUBLICATION's convoluted plot recalls the B-movie, crusading reporter against the bad-guy politicians stories of the 30s and 40s. Lois (Nancy Allen) works on a sleazy tabloid for Troppogrosso (Richard Paul), her too gross editor. On the side, Lois masquerades as the mayor's (Laurence Luckinbill) assistant and hires photgrapher Barry (David Naughton) for her expose work, such as investigating the kinky Bestiality club, where she and Barry, costumed in bird and lamb get-ups, do an impromptu “You Bring Out the Beast in Me” song-and-dance act. Other zanies include a mother (Alice Ghostley) who chats with dead celebs via a short wave radio, and a connoisseur pimp who collects Barcaloungers and El Greco's that light up. Truly trashy fun! “Mr. Bartel's sense of the ridiculous is best seen in the not especially coherent behavior of his perfectly – seriously – lunatic characters.” -Vincent Canby, The New York Times “. . .Bizarre camera angles and wacky dialogue. . .An engaging tale and innovative lensing make for a promising cult pic.” -Variety Paul Bartel will be in attendance.
