About This Film
Film Overview
You know the work of Loïe Fuller, even if the name might not sound familiar. A pioneer of modern dance, Fuller’s innovations blazed a trail that inspired artists as varied as Picasso, Georges Méliès, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Join narrator Cherry Jones in this documentary of movement, electricity, and world-altering brilliance. The early 20th century was a renaissance of new art forms and technologies, with artists from all over the world capturing their innovative and provocative performances on film for the very first time in history. In a sea of original, up-and-coming artists, perhaps no one was as dedicated to, and innovative within, her craft as Loïe Fuller. A one-of-a-kind American dancer, Fuller not only invented new styles of choreography, she also did shows by incorporating original costumes that played with lights, shadows, and colors. From the Dior runway to Shakira’s live performances, Fuller’s legacy runs much deeper than most realize. Comprised of beautiful archival footage from the early days of cinema, interviews with a variety of artists inspired by Fuller’s work, and letters and diary entries from Fuller herself (read by Emmy award winner Cherry Jones), OBSESSED WITH LIGHT is a mesmerizing documentary that will leave you feeling full of light yourself. —G.S.
