ON THE OTHER SIDE tells the story of a Croatian family still reeling from the psychological effects of war nearly 20 years after it happened. While you might expect the film to focus on the victims, this heady drama tackles the subject with a twist, asking a question not often considered: what impact does war have on the families of the bad guys? When Vesna (played by the extremely talented Ksenija Marinkovicˇ) found out her husband Zarko was fighting for the enemy, she escaped with her children, in hopes of starting a new life with new identities. Before leaving, her husband’s reputation caused her community to ostracize her, even inflicting violence on her young son as revenge. Now two decades later, they’ve finally managed to move on with their lives. But their family secret is about to catch up with them. After serving time in the Hague for war-crimes, Zarko is now a free man, desperately looking to reunite. Can he heal the wounds he’s inflicted, or will he rip off the scabs, turning his family’s life upside down all over again? (In Croatian with subtitles) —E.F.
