About This Film
Film Overview
Despite the increasing social acceptane of lesbians and gay men, there continue efforts by the religious right to “cure” and discourage homosexuality through Christian ministry, Alcoholics Anonymous-style “recovery” programs and dubious medical and psychiatric “therapies”. In ONE NATION UNDER GOD, extensive archival footage contrast straight-laced anti-gay moralizing of the 1950s and 1960s with the pseudo-scientific “reparative therapy” of the 1970s and 1980s. Various “experts” discuss the benefits of beauty shop makeovers for repentant lesbians and football games for gay men. As one born-again puts it: “God hates homosexuals and so do Christians”. The film features interviews with individuals curretnly involved in the ex-gay movement, including Gary Cooper and Michael Busse, co-founders of the Exodus International organization who have since become ex-ex-gays and have denounced the brainwashing techniques used in Exodus and similar organizations.
