Only Lovers Left Alive

Adam and Eve, the original power couple, have been together for ages. He leads a cloistered Bowie-like existence, making dirge rock in a mansion in the ruins of Detroit, while she hangs with her friend Christopher Marlowe (John Hurt) in marginal Tangiers. They owe their languid nocturnal personalities to the fact that they’re vampires—hip, sexy ones in the shape of Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston—who allow only pure, untainted hospital blood to touch their cold lips. Following a premonition about her sister Ava (Mia Wasikowska), Eve takes a night flight to Detroit. She must shelter her beloved Adam from Ava’s grasping ways, and from the fans who hound and depress him. Reunited, Adam and Eve entertain bohemian friends and reminisce about geniuses they have known, while despairing at the stupidity of modern humans. Fans of legendary indie filmmaker (and Akron native) Jim Jarmusch will delight in the wry sensibility of ONLY LOVERS LEFT ALIVE. —B.B.
