North Africa in the 1950s. Three beautiful young women from an upstanding family are happily living their lives in Algeria, until love, desperation, and the end of an era sweep their destinies into a tragic and violent whirlwind. The eldest, Zon, is an adventuress who pilots a plane and is a high flier in the realm of seduction. Malene, the owner?manager of a vineyard, interacts with the outside world but cannot acknowledge the changes taking place in the French colony. Gritte, the youngest, is less self?confident, but tries to learn from her sisters' tragedies in love, marriage, and life. Constructed as a triptych, the film follows each sister separately, and by replaying key sequences from different points of view, slowly reveals a complete and compelling family portrait.
