Film Overview

Luke and Gwendolyn are former college soccer players who never went pro. But their passion for the sport has not faded. These days they've discovered another side of the game. It's one that exists on alleys, concrete, and fields—away from the glare of bright lights and corporate sponsorships. This improvised style of play is often referred to as “pick-up,” and it's a favorite of soccer fans all over the world. In PELADA, the couple embarks on a journey to spotlight this phenomenon, traveling to 25 different countries. As they experience new cultures, they learn different variations of the game, giving them a more well-rounded view of the sport. However, it also makes for some big culture-shock moments. For example, in Iran the men won't allow Gwendolyn to play with them. Incidents like this give the film a deeper scope. It's fascinating how much you can learn about a country just through a game of soccer. In the end, their inspiring adventure sends a universal message: it's not about making it big; it's about doing what you love. —E.F.
