In dusty lots across the Dominican Republic, the next world-class baseball players, the peloteros, are made. There are more Dominican players in the American leagues than all other Caribbean players combined. All major league teams have training camps in the Dominican Republic, where players are scouted and trained for professional potential. Baseball is so important to the reputation of the nation that President Leonel Fernandez joined the opening ceremony when the Cleveland Indians established a new training academy there in May 2011. Every year on July 2nd, 16-year-old star recruits become eligible to sign professional baseball contracts and contend for their once-in-a-lifetime chance to lift themselves and their extended families out of crushing poverty. Talented young players confront ruthless competition and institutional corruption as they struggle to navigate an unfamiliar system that could help them achieve their Major League dreams.
