About This Film
Film Overview
Gregory is trying to follow his heart, but the Devil may be leading it on. Gregory is 18, lives in poverty with his grandmother and brother, and is studying furiously to obtain a scholarship. The Devil may be James, an older, wealthy businessman with a wife and daughter. He meets Gregory and is instantly attracted to him. James urges a relationship with Gregory by encouraging him to reveal his dreams and offering ways to make them come true. But Gregory comes from a different world, one of fierce loyalties, grim realities, and a constant fight for survival. Beautifully filmed in Trinidad, PLAY THE DEVIL powerfully evokes the vast gulf between their worlds and the dangers for both in crossing such fragile bridges. James is insinuating himself into Gregory’s family and Gregory is feeling trapped. With Carnival approaching and his world threatening to crumble, perhaps Gregory’s only way to break free and save his dreams is to play the devil himself! —C.R.
