Pialat's (A NOS AMOURS) forceful style throughout POLICE has the impact of a powerful punch, setting the tone immediately in the opening scene of this exciting police thriller as Inspector Mangin (Gerard Depardieu) interrogates a suspect. As a cop, Mangin is tough as nails dealing with the Paris underworld, but off duty he'll good-naturedly share a drink, a meal, or a bed with the same ones he earlier slapped around. Cynical and lonely, he only becomes vulnerable when he falls in love with a beautiful but amoral liar involved with the Tunisian drug smugglers he's after. Their steamy relationship makes him protect her at any cost, trapping him on both sides of the law. Thus the soul of a cop is intensely and intimately laid bare.
