About This Film
Film Overview
With abortion still illegal in Brazil, 17-year-old São Paulo volleyball star Sofia (Ayomi Domenica Dias) has few options when she finds herself with child, putting herself and her bodily autonomy in the crosshairs of a group of far-right, anti-choice religious zealots in this electrifying, defiantly queer debut feature.Sofia is a talented young volleyball star, undeterred by the weight of international recruitment prospects and a big championship ahead of her. When she discovers an unexpected and unwanted pregnancy, her options are limited due to Brazilian law and bureaucratic barriers to a safe termination. Despite the support of her father and teammates, Sofia faces a torrent of obstacles—betrayal of trust, preying fundamentalists, and the ever present threat of legal intervention—in order to secure her future. POWER ALLEY is a portrait of vibrant youth and supportive community combatting a dispassionate system, all encapsulated in a taut and thrilling battle both on and off the court. —C.F.Content Warning: This film contains material that may be difficult for some viewers.
