About This Film
Film Overview
In 2014 a box of forgotten letters was discovered in a storage unit in Los Angeles. Preserved in secret, these letters captured the correspondence of New York City drag queens, or “female impersonators”, from the 1950s and 1960s—back when this type of self-expression meant ostracization, jail time, or even death. Many of the letters and personal stories from the gay community—a largely marginalized part of society—were destroyed by shame-filled families who never wanted the world to know. A rare window into secret lives and the hidden history of the New York City drag scene, P.S. BURN THIS LETTER PLEASE takes viewers through the laughter, sorrows, struggles, and joys of these fabulous female impersonators. An experiential time capsule, this documentary is filled with letter readings, found footage, and interviews with many of the former drag queens themselves, telling their stories for the first time. For all of the risk associated with drag, these remarkable performers refused to hide their authenticity, paving the way for future LGBTQ+ generations. Glamourous, exciting, and dangerous, these tales from the criminal underground will inspire you to live out your truth. — G.S.
