Film Overview

Rupert Everett (“Another Country”) and Tilda Swinton (“Orlando”) “star” in this experimental feature by John Maybury, a British filmmaker, video artist and painter. Representing the most advanced stages of Maybury's style and technique, REMEMBRANCE OF THINGS FAST draws on and confronts conventions of world television and cliches of the three-minute attention span, while replacing the bland content of mainstream TV with darker, more satirical observations. With painterly landscapes of mountain vistas, oceans, lunar surfaces and invented cities serving as the location, we are introduced to a gamut of characters: drag queens, devils/angels, a man being burned at the stake, newscasters and beautiful young man in white cotton socks making love. At the same time, the main characters relate both fictional and authentic stories which form a “cut-up” narrative of language and ideas. The end result is a mesmerizing, sometimes hysterically funny, cinematic social commentary with a mostly gay sensibility.
