About This Film
Film Overview
Sweet Auburn, Atlanta. Bronzeville, Chicago. Brooklyn, Wilmington. All once prosperous Black communities, and all destroyed and drained by a country determined to separate Black people from their wealth. Rage against the system in this hard-hitting doc about the path to building a more equitable future. —M.G.Three distinct neighborhoods—Wilmington’s Brooklyn, Atlanta’s Sweet Auburn, and Chicago’s Bronzeville—have all met the same demise: the utter destruction of Black wealth. Built by newly freed slaves, these once-prosperous pockets were thriving meccas of commerce and flourishing communities of Black families and professionals. Yet massacres, race riots, lynchings, and government policies dismantled and sabotaged any forward progress. RISE AND REBUILD: A TALE OF THREE CITIES is an essential history lesson in economic injustice throughout our nation. The film introduces audiences to today’s entrepreneurs, small business owners, and activists who are hard at work restoring the prosperity their communities once reveled in. —A.B.
