About This Film
Film Overview
Sometimes you can have it all. But it takes a world of faith. Documentarian Sandi DuBowski (2001’s “Trembling Before G-d”) follows Amichai Lau-Lavie for over 20 years as he navigates the Jewish world, attempting to balance LGBTQ+ advocacy, a drag queen persona, the trappings of Orthodoxy, and his desire to become the latest in a long line of rabbis.Filmed over 21 years, SABBATH QUEEN follows Rabbi Amichai Lau-Lavie’s epic journey as the dynastic heir of 38 generations of Orthodox rabbis, including the Chief Rabbis of Israel. Though he is torn between rejecting and embracing his destiny, he becomes a drag-queen rebel, a queer bio-dad, and the founder of Lab/Shul—an everybody-friendly, God-optional, artist-driven, pop-up experimental congregation. SABBATH QUEEN joins Lau-Lavie on a lifelong quest to creatively and radically reinvent religion and ritual, challenge patriarchy and supremacy, champion interfaith love, and stand up for peace. This documentary interrogates what Jewish survival means in a difficult, rapidly changing 21st century.GUEST(S) ARE SCHEDULED TO BE IN ATTENDANCE FOR Q&A
