Film Overview

Original Title: Unter Bauern – Retter in der Nacht
English Title: Saviors In the Night

Siegmund “Menne” Spiegel first met Heinrich Aschoff and the other Westphalian farmers as a teen in the trenches of World War I. There, Menne became a decorated war hero for saving his comrades' lives. Now, many years later, Menne is forced to seek out help from his “band of brothers.” It is 1943 and the night before he and his family – beautiful, blond wife, Marga and adorable daughter Karin – are to be exported to a concentration camp. Marga and Karin take on their new name, “Krone” and assimilate into the family life with other “refugees” on Ashcroff's farm. Menne, looking too conspicuously Jewish, hides out at nearby farms, constantly hoping to catch a glimpse of his wife. But Ashcoff's teenage daughter Anni is a member of the local Nazi Youth Group and has a romantic attachment to the leader who has convinced her that she must do her German duty and turn in any Jews. The Spiegels always seem one short step away from discovery. Based on the memoir of the now 97-year-old Marga Spiegel, SAVIORS IN THE NIGHT is a gripping story of the bonds formed by friends and the complexities of family allegiances and politics.
