Troubled times turn tragic when a young Polish couple finds themselves faced with financial and domestic ruin. Bartek and Beata, raising their two young sons, are just about to fulfill their longtime dream of having an apartment of their own when the building's construction company suddenly goes broke. With all of their investment lost, they have no choice but to continue living with Bartek's mother, Theresa, in her tiny flat in Savior's Square. Theresa, increasingly critical of the out-of-work and unorganized Beata, finds herself dealing with perhaps more than she can handle, financially and emotionally. While the tension between the women rises, the two find that they must align against an irresponsible Bartek, who has found himself a lovely and successful mistress. Theresa is of little help to Beata as the young mother's emotional state goes from desperation to depression. Blame is doled out in loads and many ultimatums are issued before Beata finds herself reluctantly fleeing the country with her sons. Unable to face the future, she turns to horrifying means to make an escape. Her drastic actions force Bartek to, at last, take responsibility for his familial ruin. SAVIOR'S SQUARE is a sharp and haunting production that delves into the depths of domestic heartbreak and self-loathing while exploring the common difficulties of modern Poland.
