Saxophone Colossus

SAXOPHONE COLOSSUS is Robert Mugge's dazzling homage to Sonny Rollins, the man some have called the most accomplished improvisor in the history of jazz. Filmed in 1986 in Upstate New York and Tokyo, this engaging documentary features the world premiere of Rollins' “Concert for Tenor Saxophone and Orchestra” as well as “G-Man” and dynamic ensemble renditions of many jazz standards. Muggue, who earlier works (COOL RUNNINGS, THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO AL GREEN, THE RETURN OF RUBEN BLADES) have been presented by CIFF, displays taste, judgement, sensitivity and appreciation for Rollins and his music. SAXOPHONE COLOSSUS is presented with the support of the Northeast Ohio Jazz Society.
