Severance

A day at the office can be grueling; for these co-workers, it's turned gruesome. A group of colleagues, working for a prominent international defense company, embark to the woods of Eastern Europe for a “team building” weekend. Before they arrive at their luxury cabin, things seem astray. Once they arrive, it is still difficult for them to shake the feeling that something is just not right. When the bus driver is found mutilated and the boss's right-hand man looses a leg in a bear trap, it is obvious something is awry. A horror flick for people working from 9 to 5, SEVERANCE is as disgusting and scary as it is hilarious and clever. Smarter than your average horror film, there is the implication, and a few plausible scenarios offered, that the defense corporation has done something in its past or present that has brought all this torture and gore the employees' way. A rare achievement, Christopher Smith's second film is politically aware, without loosing a bit of the fun and unpleasantness of horror. – J.B.H.
