Film Overview

They say sex sells, but what American history has taught us is that our country isn’t sold on the importance of an updated and contemporary education as it pertains to the practicalities and realities of sex for our youth. SEX(ED) THE MOVIE is an intimate look at not only the history and evolution of sex education, but also the challenges and obstacles inherent in our culture that prevent a reasonable discussion about the advantages of informing school children about natural reproductive organs. Why is it that we can discuss the functions of the human heart, but we squirm at the mere mention of a uterus? Is it good old American puritanism? Is it the influence of male privilege, laws, education, and social norms since the beginning of time? Or is it just icky? Whatever it is, it’s 2014 and, quite frankly, we just need to grow up already. There has never been federal funding for comprehensive sex education. Yet since 2003 our government has pumped over $100 million annually into abstinence programs—which, by the way, is the exact opposite. SEX(ED) THE MOVIE—it’s never been more important. —T.W.
