Film Overview

International critics regard Soviet filmmaker Andrei Mikhalkov-Konchalovsky as a “pathbreaker” whose 15 screenplays and 7 films have well earned the top honors received in major film festivals everywhere. In the U.S. only 3 of his films have been released: “Uncle Vanya,” “A Nest of Gentlefolk” and SIBERIADE, all prize-winners. SIBERIADE is also the No. 2 box office hit of all time in the U.S.S.R. This epic film spans 6 decades in the life of a Siberian village, beginning at the turn of the century. Centering on the story of 2 families in opposition throughout 3 generations, SIBERIADE depicts, through daily life, the contrasts between the classes, their internal struggles, their loves, vengeful hates and ultimate destiny that is now history. But it is how Konchalovsky depicts his narrative that sets SIBERIADE apart from other historical epics – his expressive use of image, sound and color creates a dreamlike atmosphere that shifts from the poetic and mystic to savage furor, often surrealistically juxtaposed. An outstanding cast includes the gifted Nikita Mikhalkov, the director's brother, who is equally renowned for directing “Slave of Love” and “Oblomov,” among others. SIBERIADE is a complex, dazzling, cinematic achievement to remember. “. . .spine-tingling. . .spell-binding. . .a visually rich and imaginative evocation of the glories and pains of Soviet history within a surprisingly neutral political framework. . .big and breathtaking.” -Cineaste
