Film Overview

Charles Lane's feature film debut has garnered much international acclaim in the past few months. This low budget black-and-white film evokes the great silent comedy tradition and combines it with the immediacy of the nightly news. The Artist makes his living sketching portraits on the streets of New York, and at night returns to the abandoned tenement he calls home. When he stumbles upon a little girl left alone on the street, he hesitantly decides to take care of her. A kind businesswoman befriends the pair, and assists them when she can. As the,, Artist's feelings for this woman grow, the life he once found acceptable now seems deficient, and he is struck by the reality of his situation. Can he find the courage to change his life?
