Mexican American filmmaker and journalist Jasmin Mara López digs deep into her family’s history in this full-throated cry of a documentary, exploring her sexual assault at the hands of her Baptist reverend grandfather and the decades of secrecy that followed. —M.G.

As a child, Jasmin Mara López experienced unspeakable pain at the hands of her grandfather—a man she was taught to love and respect. Filled with shame and left to suffer quietly, López stayed silent about her sexual abuse for 24 years… but no longer. After seeing a photo of her niece with her grandfather, López decides not only to confront him, but also to shine an unflinching light on the decades of generational abuse her family has long endured, and to ensure no one suffers in silence again. A delicate balance of cinematic poetry and powerful truth telling, SILENT BEAUTY is an intimate documentary about both individual and collective healing.
