About This Film
Film Overview
Winner of the French Cesar Award for Best Actress, stunning Austrian actress Romy Schneider stars in A SIMPLE STORY as a mature woman who parts with her lover to seek the freedom of a wider range of choices in her life. Excellent ensemble acting highlights this tale of bourgeois French behavior. A SIMPLE STORY is a richly peopled tale that has a surefooted rhythm in spite of its shifting emphasis on the various characters. Director Sautet deals in his films with the new middle class, their aspirations and fears, showing a sympathy greater than many of his contemporaries. This film also represents Sautet's first film from a woman's point of view. He has worked with Romy Schneider before in “Cesar and Rosalie” (1972) and “Mado” (1976). “Extremely well acted.” – Vincent Canby, New York Times
