Film Overview

Original Title: Nesto Izmedju
English Title: SOMETHING IN BETWEEN

One of Yugoslavia's leading intellectual filmmakers, Srdjan Karanovic has directed over 70 TV productions and four feature films. In 1978 his “The Scent Of Wild Flowers” won a “Fipresci” award in Cannes, his “Petrija's Wreath” won the Director's Prize at Pula's 1980 Festival and SOMETHING IN BETWEEN was selected for the prestigious Certain Regard at Cannes in 1983. Shot on scenic locations in New York, Belgrade, Dubrovnik and Istanbul, SOMETHING IN BETWEEN is a delightfully witty, bittersweet comedy about an American journalist caught up in a “Jules and Jim” triangle with two Yugoslavs of opposite personalities. The journalist (Caris Corfman) is en route to Istanbul on assignment when she is stranded in Belgrade. She visits a surgeon she met when he studied in New York and her western outlook shocks his conservative family but appeals to his best friend, a charming rogue whose every punch line stems from American movie titles. Torn between the safe but staid doctor and his more adventurous friend, the outspoken journalist learns eastern was while the trio tries to outdo each other in oneupmanship. The highly original script twists and turns right up to its surprising end in this very contemporary “social commentary.””The word-games strongly parallel Eric Rohmer's 'moral stories' -the interchanges are revealing, searching, humorous and bizarre. The writer-director has full command of the medium from conception toacting performances to musical accompaniment.” -Ronald Holloway, International Film Guide
