About This Film
Film Overview
“Beneath the Surface, Stricken by Anomalous Passion” translates the very apt original title of SOTTO . . . SOTTO, Lina Wertmuller's (“Seven Beauties,” “Swept Away,” “A Joke of Destiny”) riotous, comic battle of the sexes and sexism. Ester and her best friend, Adele, stroll through the gardens of Bomarzo and find 2 women ardently embracing. Accustomed to fantasizing about movie stars during lovemaking with her husband, Oscar, Ester is confused when Cary Grant, her dream lover, turns into Adele. She reveals her fantasy to Adele (who confesses to similar thoughts) and to Oscar, with some omissions. He searches everywhere like a macho-madman for the suspected lover – not guessing that “he” is a “she” and that some fantasies are only that and no more . . .
