In this seductive and stylized film, Lance, a handsome movie extra and hotel employee, finds a script in one of the hotel rooms he is cleaning. He arranges an audition with its author, Clara, who is struck by Lance's resemblance to her dead brother, the script's ' subject. Lance gets the leading role, and a passionate relationship with Clara, which is forced to develop over the videophone when Clara goes back to the coast. As the production gets underway, Lance's personal attachments to the material, and to its author, effect a concern and sympathy for others he had not known before. Egoyan has established himself as one of Canada's most celebrated and talented young filmmakers, with this and his two previous features, NEXT OF KIN (CIFF 1985) and FAMILY VIEWING (CIFF 1988).
