Sometimes the difference between a good album and one that goes down in history has to do with a killer album cover. Photographer and filmmaker Anton Corbijn (“Control”) and a series of music legends chronicle the greatest album covers of all time in this rock doc about Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey “Po” Powell, founders of the art design studio Hipgnosis. —M.G.
Art studio Hipgnosis was responsible for some of the most iconic album cover art of all time, designing for such legendary bands as Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, and Styx. In this stylish documentary, director/photographer Anton Corbijn takes the audience behind the artwork to reveal the creators of Hipgnosis and tell the story of how their work became as indelible as the music itself. Theirs was a tumultuous union filled with drugs, ego, and unbridled artistry—during one of the most exciting eras of rock and roll. Detailing the creative process behind the making of some of the most famous works, SQUARING THE CIRCLE (THE STORY OF HIPGNOSIS) also features a nonstop soundtrack of rock hits and interviews with stars including Paul McCartney and Noel Gallagher. —C.F.
