Film Overview

Original Title: Die Geschichte vom Weinenden Kamel
English Title: Story of the Weeping Camel

On a nomadic farmstead in Mongolia, a rare white bactrian camel is born – a difficult birth that leaves the mother animal aloof, even hostile to her colt, (her first offspring), denying the newborn the milk it needs to thrive. Elders decide a “hoos” ritual is required, with a traditional fiddle player. Two boys in the family, Ugna and Dude, set off for the nearest mass-settlement where such a musician (and batteries for the grandfather's radio) can be found. As they ride miles for their camel, we enter the 21st century, a society of power lines, satellite TVs and video games. We realize these desert people, with their ornate costumes and ceremonies, are just as fragile as the camel, tempted by the “glass images” and technology of encroaching modern culture. An age from which Earth spirits seem to have fled in disdain. But maybe some magic can be coaxed back… THE STORY OF THE WEEPING CAMEL is both mesmerizing ethnography and a tale as gentle and warm as wool, suitable for all ages. (In Mongolian with English subtitles)
