Film Overview

Set in a Victoria coal-mining town in 1936, STRIKEBOUND is based on the actual events surrounding Australia's first sit-in strike. The prize-winning human drama is seen from the perspective of strike organizers Wattie and Agnes Doig. Opposites do attract: Wattie is a Communist, Agnes a Salvation Army teacher. After a trade union is formed, over 100 men are locked out of the mine by management, who bring in scab labor. The union, the Communist party and the Women's Auxiliary join forces to aid the miners, and in a rally they each try to outsing the other, resulting in a comic blend of “Onward, Christian Soldiers” and “Red Flag Forever.” Barricaded in the mine's tunnel (gorgeously lit only by miners' lamps) the men hold out for victory.
