About This Film
Film Overview
The mental image of a world-class powerlifter isn’t typically a ten-year-old Orthodox Jewish girl from New Jersey. Nevertheless, Naomi Kutin is “Supergirl.” As an eight-year-old karate standout, Naomi had an extraordinary strength within her, unmatched by anyone else her age. Recognizing this, her father introduced her to powerlifting, a sport he had pursued for more than 30 years making it the lifeblood of the family. At just 97 pounds, Naomi was fierce, unstoppable… and setting and breaking her own world records all before the eighth grade. But when her fearless, unshakable “Supergirl” ego lies dormant, Naomi’s awkward, uncertain sense of self kicks in, leaving her vulnerable to online criticisms of her superhuman strength, body image issues, and the inescapable growing pains of puberty. Marked by a coming-of-age bat mitzvah, SUPERGIRL bends the rules of expectations for young girls everywhere. Consider this one less glass ceiling to be shattered. —A.B.
