About This Film
Film Overview
With SWEETIE, the previously unknown Australian filmmaker Jane Campion has made her mark, and will no doubt become an influential figure in world cinema. Striking compositions, tight editing, and a changing point of view make for a surreal work which has drawn many comparisons to the works of David Lynch. But SWEETIE is totally original. Through the members of a typically abnormal suburban family, Campion explores the irrational, private obsessions that underlie our existence. Kay, slim and nervous with a phobia about trees, battles it out with her emotionally unstable sister Sweetie. Now in her twenties, Sweetie has caused more than one rift in the family, and her anarchic personality makes reconciliations nearly impossible. An offbeat and at times black comedy of modern manners, SWEETIE is funny, ridiculous and shocking.
