About This Film
Film Overview
On the remote Pacific island of Tanna, covered in rainforest and shadowed by an active volcano, young warrior Dain and maiden Wawa have fallen in love. One day Dain's father is brutally attacked by the Imedin, a neighboring tribe, and now war threatens. To secure lasting peace, the tribal elders promise Wawa as a bride to an Imedin warrior. Dain and Wawa cannot accept this arrangement, even knowing it is the law and the only way to avoid bloodshed. The lovers flee in defiance of tradition, setting off a furious chase and a series of events that endanger everyone. Based on a true story and performed for the cameras by members of the Yakel tribe, TANNA is a cinematic experience of rare beauty. Breathtakingly filmed on location, this powerful story immerses you in a world that is exotic and startling, yet achingly familiar. Here is the eternal story of individual happiness at war with tradition and society, performed as you have never seen it before. (In Nauvhal with subtitles) –C.R.
