Film Overview

In the deep of the Mojave Desert, many communities offer very few opportunities for success or escape. The result of the rampant impoverishment in these small towns is higher unemployment, higher cases of drug abuse, and lower graduation rates. THE BAD KIDS is an inspiring documentary about one school, Black Rock Continuation High School, that provides, for many, one last chance at success and opportunity for the future. Principal Vonda Viland is the heroine in this story, believing that, along with an education, many of her at-risk students need the structure, stability, and love she and her colleagues provide at Black Rock. Fighting against broken homes, child abuse, and the students’ bleak outlook on their own lives, THE BAD KIDS takes us deep into the trenches as the staff and students work to provide the necessary love and encouragement, pushing for each person to realize his or her full potential. It’s promising to see such strength from both teachers and students and uplifting to know that, when all else fails, a little love will still go a long way. –T.W.
