About This Film
Film Overview
Daniel Day-Lewis is up to his usual expert character work in this psychologically complicated film of a bond between a father and a daughter. Day-Lewis plays Jack, a stubborn man living in a hard-won paradise. He and teenage daughter Rose live on a beautiful island ?off the grid.? They use wind for energy, live in a hand-built house, grow their own food, and relish the quiet. It?s left over from a 1960s commune experiment gone bad, and Jack and Rose are the only two remaining. Rose is a wild child, and their idyllic life and intense attachment is threatened by encroaching development led by Martin (Beau Bridges), and Jack?s relationship to Kathleen (Catherine Keener). When Kathleen and her two odd sons move in, Rose?s life is turned upside-down, and she retaliates in alarming ways. A compelling film about living differently, and holding onto one?s ideals, THE BALLAD OF JACK AND ROSE is an ancient story told with a contemporary sensibility. As Rose, young actress Camilla Belle makes an indelible impression.
