About This Film
Film Overview
The Vistula River, winding through Warsaw, bears witness to an abominable crime. Police divers fish from its frigid depths two naked, male bodies, recently decapitated and wrapped in plastic. How could such an atrocity have happened? All too easily in THE DEBT, a true story transformed into stark drama that demonstrates the ease with which evil begets evil as seemingly innocent people are pushed to their limits. Adam and Stefan start building their futures on an entrepreneurial plan to import Italian scooters into the country. After the bank turns down their credit application, Stefan chances to run into a boyhood pal, Gerard, evidently rich wiht cash and magnanimous with his favors. His eager support seems too good to be true. It is. Gerard turns out to be a brutal extortionist with ties to the Russian mafia, who initially demnads $6,000 in exchange for his fruitless services, with an interest rate of $1,000 per day and no hesitation about using violence to collect. Adam and Stefan try to run, but can't hide from Gerard's frightening threats and intimidation – and neither can you, as the coils of fate tighten and the idea of “debt” takes on an even deeper meaning. (In Polish with English subtitles)
