High in the remote highlands of Bhutan, 12-year-old pianist and narrator Hillary O’Sullivan travelled with a piano and a message. ‘The Girl and Her Piano’ is a poetic and urgent short documentary that follows her remarkable journey to 4,000 metres above sea level, where her performance in the presence of the King of Bhutan becomes both witness and voice for a planet in crisis. Surrounded by indigenous highland people who face the threats of global warming, she gave a piano performance stirred by a desire to continue speaking through music for places that cannot speak for themselves. Directed by Elaine Lim in her filmmaking debut, and captured with striking visual intimacy, The Girl and Her Piano tells the story of a young artist using her gift to confront the greatest challenge of our time.
