Film Overview

The Gospel of Soul traces the evolution of gospel and soul music from its African roots to its profound influence on American culture. Guided by Dr. Obadiah Baker and set against the backdrop of Cleveland’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the film weaves historical insight with lived experience through the voices of influential artists Alonzo Harris and Rodney Hubbard, with special guest Melonie Daniels. Together, they explore how spirituals, blues, and jazz shaped the sound and spirit of Black America.
Through personal stories of trauma, resilience, and hope—including memories of church violence, family struggle, and healing—the documentary reveals how gospel music became both a cultural inheritance and a lifeline for generations. Blending history, performance, and testimony, The Gospel of Soul is a moving portrait of music as sanctuary, identity, and collective strength.
