Film Overview

Based on Stephen Fry’s novel of the same name, THE HIPPOPOTAMUS tells the story of Ted—a once rebellious and cult-hero poet who hasn’t written a poem in decades. Now relegated to being a theater critic, Ted loses his job after punching an actor mid-performance and finds solace in the bottle (where no one expects a poem). When he’s approached by the daughter of an old flame to seek out the miracle that cured her leukemia, Ted must travel to his friend’s old English country estate to investigate the nature of the healing. THE HIPPOPOTAMUS is everything we love about British comedy: irreverent, smart, and uproarious. When Ted discovers the teenage son of the estate’s family is healing people and animals, he can’t believe his ears. When he witnesses the virile young man’s methods for healing, Ted can’t believe his eyes. THE HIPPOPOTAMUS is a film about the search for big miracles, when it’s the small wonders that define us. —T.W.
